This weekend up to 1000 athletes from across NSW will assemble at Wallerawang to compete in the 2008 Little Athletics State Cross Country and Road Walk titles.
Hosted by the Lithgow Little Athletic Club, competitors ranging in age from under 7 to under 15 will contest 32 events around the scenic Lake Wallace, located just off the Great Western Highway, 15 km south west of Lithgow.
The Lithgow Little A’s Club will be well represented and boast competitors who could find themselves in the placings in their respective age groups.
President of the Lithgow Little A’s Club, Ray Stoneley, said the club is looking forward to seeing some of the State’s best young sportspeople compete on what is a challenging course.
“Our club has spent a lot of time preparing the cross country and walking courses so the athletes have a great day and hopefully turn in some great performances,” Ray said.
“This is the first time Lithgow Little A’s has hosted the State titles and we’re encouraging as many registered NSW Little A’s members as possible to come and participate.
“Little Athletics New South Wales has told us we can expect anywhere from 500 to 1000 runners and walkers to compete on the day.
“Who knows how many future Olympic athletes could be among the kids racing,” Ray said.
Kicking off at 9.30 am on Sunday the competitors will have an opportunity to walk the courses before racing begins at 10 am.
“Entries will be taken on the day so we’d suggest getting to Lake Wallace a little bit earlier to register,” Ray said.
Full canteen facilities will be available at the course and the public is encouraged to come and support the hundreds of competitors.
“Little athletics is all about family fun and fitness and the 2008 State Cross Country and Road Walk titles is definitely about the participation of families having fun while keeping fit,” Ray said.
