The Lithgow under 13 boys’ district hockey team coached by Richard Sharp travelled to Orange to compete in the State championships.
The team played great hockey and showed off their skills and were joint winners in the B division with Central Coast. (see page 42 for team photo).
Orange were the first opponent and the boys came away with a 6-0 win.
This was a good all-round attacking game with Nick Judge scoring from a deflection from a free hit just outside the circle.
Lachlan Sharp scored two goals, one of which he slotted in the top corner while the other was from good teamwork.
Zach Sharp scored two, one of which also came from great lead up work and the other a great solo effort.
Daniel Sheppeard hunted well for the ball and picked up a loose ball to score.
Nathan Lester had an excellent game, shutting down the defence.
Nick Judge made some great leads into the circle and attacked well while Josh Bennett hassled well up front.
Greg Nelson hassled well and made some great tackles.
Lithgow took on Central Coast next and this was a much tougher game.
Lithgow led 2-0 at half time with goals to Jack Neale and Josh Bennet.
Neale positioned himself well on the post after a short corner and deflected one in and Bennett deflected one in after receiving a great cross ball from Zach Sharp.
The Lithgow team went back out after half time and played most of the game in Central Coast’s, half struggling to put good passes together.
Central Coast slotted in three quick goals to win.
Sam Williams showed great determination in both attack and defence.
Zach Sharp was very strong in attack and recovered well to play his part in defence.
Lithgow then played Far North Coast the next day and they lifted their game to win 2-0.
The first goal came from a huge scramble in the goals and Jack Neale finally put it over the line.
Joe Radburn scored the next, which originated from a short corner move.
Tom McGrath played strong down the left and Lachlan Sharp threatened the defence every time he got the ball.
Daniel Sheppeard played well on the wing, making some great leads.
Lithgow finished second in their pool and crossed over to play New England in the semi final.
Lithgow were slow to start but came away with a 3-0 win.
Joe Radburn’s goal came from a short corner, which he slammed in.
After excellent lead up work, the ball was pushed to Nick Judge who scored in the corner for the second goal.
Lachlan Sharp received a cross ball to rifle it into the back board, giving the keeper no chance of saving it.
Ben Nyitrai had an excellent game marking his player out of the play.
Dylan Taylor had to make a couple of great saves late in the game.
Joe Radburn was very strong at the back, defending well and setting up the attack.
The final was against Central Coast, a game that was very similar to the round game.
All the Lithgow boys put in great efforts as they did throughout the entire championships.
Lithgow once again took the lead in the first half 2-0.
Daniel Sheppeard made a great break up the sideline which was trapped in the circle and pushed in by Lachlan Sharp.
The second goal came from a short corner where Joe Radburn hit it to Nick Judge on the post who banged it in.
Central Coast came out firing in the second half to take the lead 3–2.
Lithgow played with determination to even the score up from another short corner seeing the ball through to Jack Neal who slammed it home.
The scores were locked at full time so the drop off rule applied.
At six minutes there were nine boys and then another six with seven players.
The game was still locked at 3-all so Lithgow and Central coast were declared joint winners.
The Players’ Player for the championship (voted on by the players, coach and manager) went to a well deserved winner who never gave up in Lachlan Sharp.
Lithgow were rewarded by Joe Radburn and Zach Sharp being named in the under 13 State team to travel to Adelaide later in the year.
