Semi final hopes are still alive

The Wallerawang Warriors kept their Mid West rugby league semi final plans on target with a good 24-20 win over Gulgong.

This was a great result considering they were down on troops and were playing away.

The win moved them up into 11 points with Gulgong and they now sit behind Oberon 20, Kandos 15 and Portland 14.

They have a bit of breathing room behind them with the Bears falling back on 7 while Blackheath are only making up the numbers on 2.

The Warriors got off to the perfect start when Reggi Rowley crossed for a four pointer in the first four minutes.

Steve McCann made it 8-0 minutes later with a top try with Wang keeping Gulgong on the back foot.

Midway through the half, Gulgong got back in the game when Warren Thomas scored an unconverted try to make the score 8-4.

The two teams were going try for try and it was Wang’s turn next when Paul Cinat scored and with the Glen Stapleton conversion the score was pushed along to 14-4.

Again Gulgong came back at the Warriors with Todd Malone scoring and James Carter converting to again creep up closer at 14-10 which was the half time score.

Gulgong hit the front for the first time in the match when Warren Thomas crossed for his second try two minutes into the second half and with the Carter conversion, Gulgong led 16-14.

Their lead only lasted 10 minutes, with Glen Stapleton scoring an unconverted try to edge ahead 18-16.

The Warriors received some breathing space when Paul Cinat made it try number two with the Warriors now enjoying a 24-16 lead with 24 minutes still left on the clock.

Gulgong made a fight of it with another try to make the score 24-20, but the defence of the Warriors managed to hold them out for the rest of the game to score a great win.

It was a good team effort with all the players including the bench of four contributing to the win.

Best for the Warriors was Glen Stapleton while the Dinner for two went to Brad Cornwell who showed that he has lost none of his talent.

The Warriors thank all the supporters who made the sojourn to Gulgong, their support was much appreciated by the players.
