Newcomers bounce back in snooker

Newly formed Pockets bounced back from their first round defeat with an encouraging 6-1 win over Red Sox in the latest round of interclub snooker.

Adam Caine kicked off his 2008 campaign against John Lyons.

Despite some good early signs from Caine it was Lyons with his years of experience who was able to overcome an early deficit to win 77-73 and put Red Sox up one nil.

However this would be the only point Red Sox would be able to pick up as Pockets would go on to win the remaining five games.

A red hot Brett Holt was up against Jeff Stait in what would turn out to be a one-sided affair.

Holt, receiving 26 start, was quick out of the blocks and was able to capitalise on some uncharacteristic errors from Stait racing to an unassailable lead before going on to take the game 102-41.

Todd Bates was up next against Gary Nolan.

With both players patchy throughout the game looked to go either way but a determined performance from Bates saw him secure the black for a 49-46 win and moving Pockets into a 2-1 lead.

Next up for Pockets were Jaime Anthes and Matt Tolhurst for Red Sox.

Tolhurst started the stronger but was unable to take advantage of some chances late in the game and this was enough for Anthes to stay close and force a black ball game.

Trading shots on the black it was Anthes who eventually scored for a 47-41 victory.

Game five was another close finish with Sharon Missingham outlasting Cec Thompson 73-55.

The momentum swayed back and forth with both players seemingly at the top of their games but it was Missingham who was able to take a vital lead into the colours, doing enough to claim victory and put Pockets ahead 4-1.

Scott Cameron put the icing on the cake with a solid performance in his game against Ian Bulkeley.

Cameron was strong from start to finish and this was enough to earn him a 64-41 win and thus securing a 6-1 win for Pockets.

Jaime Anthes and John Lyons were named best and fairest for their teams.

Yabius remain undefeated in two hit outs after a thrilling 4-3 win over Helmets.

Sandra Chadwick opened up Helmets’ account with an impressive 74-48 win over Trevor Cameron.

Cameron started as the aggressor, drawing to within a few points heading into the colours but a string of solid pots saw Chadwick slowly pull away.

Todd Milligan was in devastating form when he went up against Dave Foster.

Milligan never looked in doubt, taking advantage of some errors from an out of sorts Foster to secure a 76-9 victory.

Ian Miles was next up for Helmets against Paul Hewitt from Yabius.

Hewitt looked good early on but for the second week in a row Miles was able to overcome all obstacles to win 93-35 and put Helmets back in front.

Damien Croucher fired straight back for Yabius with an emphatic 61-20 win over Helmets’ new recruit Scott Trist.

Having not played in more than three months Croucher looked shaky early but a barrage of points late in the game saw him run away.

Grahame Fowler continued his recent run of form with a solid performance over Chris Milligan of Yabius.

Milligan’s desperate efforts to claw his way into the game only saw him come up short with Fowler withstanding the onslaught to record a 68-46 win giving Helmets a 3-2 advantage.

A runway Mal Hewitt raced to an early 45-1 lead over Justin Nelson in the final frame.

All was looking well for Hewitt until a string of unforced errors saw him hand over control to Nelson.

With a few fortuitous shots Nelson was able to slowly pull away, winning 88-56, giving Yabius a 4-3 win.

Todd Milligan and Grahame Fowler were named best and fairest for their teams.

SSR bounced back from their opening round 6-1 loss with a 6-1 win over Tigers.

The match began with SSR new recruit Brett Bradley winning 56-53 over Keith Morris.

Bradley looked impressive in the beginning but Morris’s tenacity saw him draw level heading into the colours.

Unfortunately for Morris, his run was left a little too late as SSR went on to secure the opening point.

Mick Tonkin continued for SSR in another close finish against Terry Christian.

In a closely fought game it was Tonkin who was able to keep his nose in front throughout, going on to win 58-51.

Terry McMillan made in 3-0 to SSR with a superb display over Diane Stait.

With runs of 27 and 25 McMillan soon found himself with a match winning lead.

Despite losing the blue pink and black, McMillan held on for a 86-68 win.

Frank Wawn gave SSR an unbeatable lead after winning game four 52-46 over Leo Keeley.

The game was well and truly in the balance deep into the frame only to see Wawn secure the black for victory.

Rob Mitchell put Tigers on the board with a 56-38 win over Shannon Baer.

Looking to gain some momentum for his side Mitchell went about stretching his early advantage.

Baer fought hard but the difference proved too much to overcome, eventually falling short.

Tom Mayers wrapped the match up for SSR with a 63-46 win over Brian Johnson.

Playing as a reserve Mayers was at the top of his game with Johnson having no answers.

Rob Mitchell and Terry McMillan were the standouts for their teams.

There was only one match at Club Lithgow with the local grudge match between Jiggers and Miscues.

Wayne Lewis faced off against Rob Farnsworth with Lewis putting in a good showing to outlast Farnsworth 76-38.

Phil Nightingale proved far too strong running out an 83-37 winner.

Ritchie Bilby made it two from two for the season after the next game when he accounted for Jason Anderson 59-41.

It was a game that should have gone down to the wire and it did with Bilby having that little bit extra to get him over the line.

Jim Thomas scored a win in a low scoring game against Brian Nightingale.

In a close game throughout it was Thomas who was able to hang on winning in a black ball finish 39-32.

Greg Sutton extended his lead atop the Roley Casey standings with an impressive showing against Kevin Slaven.

Getting off to a flier Sutton was able to capitalise on Slaven’s errors running out an 83-16 victor and putting his side ahead 3-2.

Marj Lennox ended all hopes for Miscues when she scored a 72-65 win over Col Tattersall.

Conceding 11 start Tattersall had to get off to a quick start and he did clawing his way back into the contest but a determined effort from Lennox saw her claim the vital points necessary to secure the game and the match 5-2 for Jiggers.

Phil Nightingale and Wayne Lewis were the standouts.

Yabius lead on nine with Pockets, Helmet and Miscues on eight, SSR and Jiggers seven, Tigers six and Red Sox three.
