Workies bowler Michael Djatschenko has progressed from Workmens Club singles champion to District Champion of Champions after winning the tournament held at Lithgow City Bowling Club.
Djatschenko’s first game was against Hazelbrook champion R Nowland who he defeated 31-12.
Nowland started well, holding Djatschenko down at 7-1, but the Workies champ clawed his back to win comfortably.
His next match up was against Katoomba champion N Darias.
The two had a very competitive match, with Djatschenko trailing most of the way.
He pulled out all the stops to sneak home 31-29 in a thriller.
The win put Djatschenko into the final where he was pitted against Lawson champion C Trelear.
The two contested a quality final, with the Lithgow bowler running out victor at 31-23.
The win is a fine result for both Djatschenko and Lithgow Workmens Club, who are always proud of their players succeeding in competitions.
Djatschenko now moves onto Zone level and the club is confident he will have a strong chance of again taking out victory.
Another bowler having a very successful time is Ken Poppett.
Poppett, fresh from winning the Blue Mountains Bowler of the Year award, recently took out the Zone championships for senior bowlers.
In his opening match, Poppett took on Goulbourn Railway’s Joe Cooke, whom he beat 31-19.
Poppett then progressed to take on Bathurst Panther’s John Finlay who he also beat comfortably 31-16.
Poppett’s form continued to be strong as he disposed of Penrith’s Gary Adnum in a good final 31-23.
Congratulations to Poppett who now moves onto State level.
Poppett is also now preparing to do battle in the Zone triples with teammates Kevin Fitzpatrick and Jeff Madden.
The boys take on the Gulgong side of D Mealing, B Hawkins and P Ryan in the first round.
Djatschenko is also preparing for Zone conflict in the Zone Fours and will link up with his team of Mark Sheppard, Gary Green and Phil Gray to take on the St Mary’s outfit of R Tucker, E Boyan, G Farrell and W Walton.
Workies bowlers are reminded that it is play or forfeit by Sunday, July 20 on all handicap pairs games in the first round, so hurry and get in while the weather holds out.
