As their mid year musical production, Lithgow Musical Society have chosen to perform the challenging show of ‘Cats’.
This is one of the most popular of all the musicals by Andrew Lloyd Weber and has had extended runs on both the West End in London and on Broadway.
As the society has developed over the last 19 years, more and more challenging shows have been performed and this is probably the most difficult of all the productions so far.
However, such is the depth of talent in the society that although it is arguably the most difficult it promises to be the best yet.
The music of the show is very beautiful with a huge amount of choral work but as the society is well known for the standard of its choral work it is handling this very well.
As all members of the cast are required to make some form of feline movement the choreography is very important and everyone is working hard to ensure that they are able to bring the show to life.
Some cast members, of course, have more dancing than others but it is certain that patrons will be delighted with the standard of the production.
Some cast members will be “pit singers” and these people are of great importance in sustaining the singing.
This show has a very large cast with many familiar faces but with also many new members.
Some cast members have not appeared on stage for a while others have also made welcome returns.
There is a huge range of characters with no one person in a stand out role.
However the best known song “Memories” will be performed by Gaye Avery as Grizabella.
Other cast members who are well known to Lithgow audiences include Mark Watchhorn, Gavin Lyons, Alan George, Rebecca Lewis, Margaret Cribb, Tara Gray, Sharon Lewis, Fiona Hutton, Wendy Kirk, Sherryn McConnell, Alex McNiven, Sam Mitchell, Domino Holbrook Cove, Paul Goodwin, Bruce Ryan, Chad Newton, Daniel Holmes and Daniel Hilliard.
Almost every member of cast has some solo work so this is a real team effort.
Wendy Kirk and Gaye Avery have worked very hard to ensure the choreography is first rate and a huge amount of work has been done by Faye McConnell and Denise Ivers in researching costumes and makeup and sourcing these aspects of the show.
Paul Goodwin and Alex McNiven are in charge of the technical aspects and their hard work is integral to the shows’ success.
Brian Jones is designing the backdrop and his talents will be remembered in the Swinging Sixties Show.
Maureen Newell has to be commended for conquering a really difficult musical score.
She has spent hours working on the music and audiences are sure to be impressed with the talent, dedication and support she gives to the cast.
The whole show is directed by musical director Rae Burton who brings a wealth of experience to this task.
The dates for Cats are this Sunday May 18 at 2 pm; Friday May 23 at 8 pm; Saturday May 24 at 8 pm; Sunday May 25 at 2 pm; Friday, May 30 at 8 pm and Saturday, May 31 at 8 pm with all sessions at the Union Theatre.
