Max is part of a new breed in Integral workforce

Local ‘bright spark’ Max McKinney, 17, of Marrangaroo Fields, is among Integral Energy’s first ever intake of Transmission System Electrician apprentices.

Max is one of 15 new apprentices who started their training this week with Integral Energy, the NSW state-owned energy corporation which manages the local electricity network.

Integral Energy’s General Manager of Human Resources, Drew Ferguson, said the newcomers are being trained in the maintenance and upgrade of Integral Energy’s high voltage network, to address a potential skills shortage.

“We’ve identified a need to boost our next generation of specialised field staff who maintain and upgrade high voltage equipment across our electricity network,” Mr Ferguson said.

“I’m pleased to welcome Max who has been selected from a competitive pool of 1200 applicants from across the country.

“Aged between 16 and 39, our latest crop of apprentices will be in training for the next four years, before becoming Integral Energy’s first to graduate from the Transmission System Electrician apprenticeship.

“Our new faces will be able to explore everything Integral Energy has to offer, from competitive pay rates, specialised training and a nine-day fortnight, to wide-ranging opportunities to move into engineering-based roles.

“During their training, they’ll also receive paid leave to attend TAFE college and gain valuable hands-on field experience,” he said.

Recent recruit Max added: “I did work experience with Integral Energy when I was at high school.

“I learnt a lot then and saw the apprenticeship as a great place to start in the electrical industry.”

Mr Ferguson said Integral Energy will launch its 2009 apprentice recruitment campaign later this month.

“An Integral Energy apprenticeship is a great way to start, or further, your career and get involved in supporting your local community.

“I urge anyone interested in a career in the booming energy sector to keep an eye on Integral Energy’s website for details,” he said.
